Scout went to the Restore Honor Rally Saturday. Getting there was a little tough. In it’ infinite wisdon, VDOT closed I66 down to one lane, blocking off exits to the metro. I later learned that 50 was closed as well in Maryland. Folks from all over the USA learned how the DC metro system works Saturday.

As a pup, Scout spent some time in NY, and rode the NY subway, you purchased a token that let you ride until you went through the turnstile. Seems much simpler than DC’S system where you load money onto a paper that a machine reads and asks (i’m not making this up) a burerucat sitting behind a desk if it’s ok to let you enter the turnstile, than when you depart the train on the other end, you enter your ticket and the same burecrat reads your ticket once again and deducts your fare from your ticket, and enters that information into your Federal jacket that is in the basement of the IRS building. Every effort to confuse the traveler is made on the ticket purchaseing machines, and Metro employees are ordered to NEVER NEVER help the public with the machines.

Thursday, August 5th, 2010MADISON COUNTY LOGO
Wednesday, August 4th, 2010Recently Madison County decided all by themselves to cut down all the shade trees that for years stood sentinel duty beside the monuments to the county war heroes. I stood under their shade on many Memorial days, that is where the SCV holds their annual Memorial day celebration. Two linger in my mind as very special. One of those special Memorial days, a very good friend stood at the podium in his WWII uniform, he was a member of Patton’s army, and told his war experience under the shade of those maple trees. Last year, a family friend’s name was added as the newest member from the County to lay down his life for his country, the ceremony on a very hot day, with relief from the heat found in the shade of the trees.
Now, like my friends, the trees are gone.
Their service over, and like my family friend cut down in the prime of his life. I understand the trees belong to the County, and it is their responsibility to maintain the property. Change comes hard, and sometimes seems senseless.
The courtyard now stands empty, the monuments alone in the hot sun.
